Term life covers a set period, such as 10, 20 or 30 years. It pays a death benefit if you die during that term and the claim meets the policy’s terms. Coverage ends unless you renew or convert when available.
Whole life provides lifetime coverage as long as required premiums are paid. Traditional level-premium whole life has fixed premiums and can build cash value.
Accidental death coverage pays for a covered accidental death. It does not cover death from illness or natural causes. Exclusions and time limits apply.
Level-term premiums stay fixed during the selected term and generally increase if renewed afterward. Traditional level-premium whole life premiums remain fixed for life. Check the guarantees in your policy.
Employer coverage can help, but its amount may fall short of your family’s needs and it typically ends when you leave the job. Compare it with your mortgage, income replacement and other expenses, and check portability or conversion options.
